Kyla Jenée Lacey is a spoken word artist, comedian, writer, painter, and reformed theater kid, who has roots in Chicago, Central Florida, and Atlanta. She was 9 years old when her first poem was copyrighted, which would explain the "excessive talking," remarks on her report cards, clearly not everyone saw the vision
Kyla has performed a one woman show of poetry, comedy and storytelling at over 300 colleges, in over 40 states. Outside of thewriting workshops she has hosted, her work has been translated into several languages, used in high school and collegiate curriculum and protest signs, globally. She made international news when a teacher was fired for showing one of her poems about racism, to his mostly white high school class, ultimately resulting in his termination, and in an ongoing legal battle, sorry Matt.
Kyla is a strong but underrated force, with many mainstream artists sharing and citing the genius of her work. She has also gained a strong, yet mighty fanbase, due to her authenticity, irreverent humor and thought provoking social media posts, that get stolen a lot. She is the author of a tongue-in-cheek book of poems about feminism for manchildren, titled, Hickory Dickory Dock, I Do Not Want Your C*ck.
Kyla has bylines from BET.com, the Huffington Post, the Root, and is currently a staff writer for the Hub News. Her work has led her to appearances with or on, the Tamron Hall Show, Last Week with John Oliver, The Don Lemon Show, Fox News (that was on some hating shit, though), Roy Wood Jr., Aries Spears, the Lurie Favors-Daniels Show, the Karen Hunter Show and WAN Poetry, to name a few. She has been written about in the Atlantic, New York Times, Washington Post, Harper’s Bazaar Singapore, Slate Magazine, and surely somebody’s burn book.
She is owned by an unnecessary, yet legal, amount of pets and is her mother’s favorite poet, for whom she credits with helping her make it this far.
